Gerakas Beach

Gerakas Beach is the finest beach on Zakynthos's Vassilikos Peninsula and one of the most ecologically significant in the entire Mediterranean — a 700-metre crescent of clean golden sand within the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, designated specifically to protect the largest concentration of loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) nesting beaches in the Mediterranean. The beach is managed by the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece (ARCHELON), and a ranger presence throughout the summer season enforces the strict regulations that have preserved its nesting habitat: no water sports, no beach furniture on the sand from June to September, beach access restricted after sunset, and warning signs around active turtle nests — distinctive wire-mesh cones covering each confirmed nest site.

The practical reward for visitors is extraordinary: loggerhead sea turtles are regularly visible swimming in the shallow water directly in front of the beach from June through September, particularly in the early morning hours when the turtles come close to shore after nesting at night. Snorkelling over the submerged seagrass meadows in the bay's eastern section can produce face-to-face encounters with turtles browsing the vegetation — an experience that costs nothing, requires no boat trip, and leaves most visitors visibly moved. ARCHELON rangers at the beach can point visitors towards the current best locations for turtle observation and provide context on the nesting cycle, egg incubation, and hatchling emergence process.

The beach facilities are minimal by Greek resort standards — this is deliberate conservation policy — with a single small café and limited parking at the road end. The walk from the parking area to the beach takes 10–15 minutes on a pleasant sandy track through scrubland. The sand itself is fine and pale gold, the water calm and clear in the protected bay, and the general atmosphere of the beach is one of genuine, unhurried natural encounter rather than tourist spectacle.

Getting there: 18km south of Zakynthos Town along the Vassilikos Peninsula road (well-signposted). No public bus service — rental car or scooter recommended. Taxis from Zakynthos Town: approximately €20–25. Best time to visit: June–September for the best turtle sightings; arrive before 9am for the highest probability of seeing turtles in the water.
